巴不得媽媽 Divas in Distress initial thoughts and Character chart (in English)

I think that Divas in Distress is a rather daring series. It doesn't have any of the top fadans or siu sangs. The only 'in' casts are Mandy Wong and Him Law, who funnily enough are paired together in this series.

To be honest, it's one of those series I'm not interested in. I'm not really that interested in the plot of this series, and probably wouldn't watch it if I were at school or university. But as it's holiday time for me, I'll watch anything TVB puts on!

I think it's quite nice though, having two veteran actors Liza Wang and Gigi Wong as the main characters then some new-comers. Don't forget Chin Kar Lok, who debuted in the acting industry at 1985 who is the male lead here for his third series. I thought he was excellent in A Bride for a Ride which was a massive comedy, so I wonder how he will be in a slightly more serious role!

I've only watched the first episode of Divas in Distress so far. I'm not really drawn into the series yet. The start of the episode bored me at the start but got a bit more interesting towards the end when they start to draw the characters together and show that Liza and Gigi have some ongoing feud. 

Newcomer Eliza Sam had the most screen time for the actresses in this episode. I was looking forwards to her performance. It's a new face, and even though this character might be a bit too main for her since she's only started acting, I hope she starts well, or she's going to flop, like Matthew Ko who hasn't had a dominant role since "Man in Charge" with Kenneth Ma.

I'm neutral towards her performance so far. I didn't notice her accent much in Ghetto Justice 2, but as soon as she opened her mouth in Divas in Distress I heard it. I think it's quite light, but just in a way that makes her quite hard to understand. I think it's better than Christine Kuo's, but not as good as JJ Jia's. As there's 22 episodes of "Divas in Distress", I hope that I will get used to it! 

Acting wise I could see that she's giving it all her throwing herself into it which is quite nice. Because of this though I think she's exaggerating sometimes with her facial expressions and movements. For her first major role though, I'd say she's doing quite well so far. Let's see how she performs through the whole series.

Haven't seen much of Liza or Gigi yet. Liza always tends to play the rich lady with a good posture but bad temper, and it looks like it's going to be the same again. I don't remember seeing Gigi in any major roles before so I look forwards to seeing her on screen too!

怒火街頭2 Ghetto Justice 2 review

Even though I knew the vague outline of Ghetto Justice last year , I never watched it, but after all the rave reviews and prizes it won, I decided to watch Ghetto Justice II.
I also heard that the first series focused on murder cases, so some preferred the first series. I guess most of the the cases in GH2 might not have been as exciting as it dealt with less severe cases. Still, I can't compare because I didn't watch the first series!
Spoilers alert!

Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) as Law Ba (羅力亞)

Law Ba is released after 3 years of being in prison and gets his lawyer license back. Working with Kris, he runs the legal advice centre to help the local people with any legal problems. It is revealed that he was once married to a women, and he meets her, Lynette, again 10 years after they split up. They had never divorced, and Lynette had been looking for Law Ba for the last 10 years, facing all sorts of dangers, for Law Ba left their relationship without saying anything. As Lynette finds out that Law Ba has another half, she agrees to leave their relationship, but does not want Kris to know that they were married to retain some dignity.

As Law Ba solves more cases Kris finds out that he is a married man. Though angry, she understands that the past was the past, and that Law Ba loves Kris, not Lynette.

Later on, due to differences in thoughts of a case involving Law Ba and Kris' friend and also questions between Law Ba and Lynette's realtionship, the two become cold towards each other. During this time, Lynette decides that she will fight Kris for Law Ba as she feels that Kris does not sacrifice enough for Law Ba, whereas Lynette would. Though Law Ba and Kris' heart are towards each other, there is always something in the way to stop them from reconciling.

The last case involves the evil landlord, Dai Chiu Long who gets murdered after a visit from Kris and Law Ba. The police finds Kris holding the Hockey Stick which was used to murder the villain, and Law Ba unconscious. Law Ba initially forgets what happens what happened before he got unconscious, but later remembers that he had actually murdered Dai Chiu Long himself, and Kris had knocked him out to frame herself to protect him. He comes out with what he did, and Kris is freed but he still has to be found guilty or not guilty of intentional murder. In the end, he finds evidence that Dai Chiu Long is a violent man, and that Kris' mother was in danger of death, which was why Law Ba murdered him. The jury finds that he is unguilty of intentional murdering and he is also set free.

In the last scene, we see that Law Ba and Kris are back together again, and they run off with their closest friends when they receive a call that they are needed in another legal case.

Before I forget, did anyone notice his varying hair length at the start of the series?

Anyway, I guess this is the scrawny man that everyone loved so much in the first series! I've noticed that I've started to do his hand gesture thing when I'm speaking and I'm trying my very best to stop doing it : D

His scenes with Kris were very sweet, I like it when he rubs his head up and down Kris' shoulder. I could definitely see chemistry between the two main characters! 

I thought the character dealt his relationship with Lynette very poorly. He knew that Lynette still liked him, but still spent all that time with her and talk of their "good old days eating custard tarts".


What confused me was Law Ba and Lynette's relationship. Why did no one, even Kris suggest that maybe they should get a divorce? Throughout the whole series Law Ba was a married man. Even when they take their marriage certificate to scare off Lynette's pursuer in her surgery they seem to forget that they're still tied by a marriage certificate. Law Ba is a lawyer, out of everyone you'd think that he'd notice that he's still married. And he still is right to the end of the series. 


Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) as Kris (王思苦)

Whilst Law Ba is serving his sentence in jail, Kris covers his job for him. When he is finally out of prison, she persuades him to submit an application to get his lawyer license back. Though he does not at first, he does later and it turns out that Kris had saved his lawyer equipment, confident that one day he'd be a lawyer again.

She later finds and and forgives Law Ba when she finds out that he was married to her new friend Lynette and she knows that Law Ba loves her.

Later Lynette gets into a coma because of protecting Law Ba. Kris feels that Lynette is the one that sacrifices herself more and promises that as long as she woke up, she would leave Law Ba so Lynette could be with him.

Later Kris attempts to cover up Law Ba after he murders Dai Chiu Long. Law Ba admits the murder himself , but the court sees him to be not guilty of unintentional murder so he does not have to go to prison. In the last scene, Lynette wakes up and reminds Kris of her promise to leave Law Ba for herself. It turns out that Lynette said this on purpose so the two can get back together, whereas Lynette finds her own man.

Kris' character is a strong women with strong thoughts, but who loves her man dearly. She is willing to get life imprisonment instead of Law Ba, and even though she doesn't in the end, it shows that she is not the only one that will sacrifice herself for Law Ba.

I thought this was an entirely convincing portrayal of a character by Myolie. To me, her portrayals normally are. Even though I don't think she should have got her Best Actress award in 2011 for The Curse of the Royal Harem I definitely thought it was her turn (Tavia this year please!). 

Sam Lee (李璨琛) as Ah Deng (阿釘) and JJ Jia (賈曉晨) as Sum Sum (心心)

Ah Deng truly misses Jing Jing, his love who died from the first series. Sum Sum also misses her boyfriend who died years ago, whose last words were to tell her to find her own happiness. The two meet and after initial misunderstanding, they feel a connection. Though Ah Deng does not admit his feelings at first, the two get together in the end as he almost loses Sum Sum. They decide to marry in the end

I really like the song that plays when the two are on screen! Click here if anyone wants to listen to it!

I think this is my favourite pair in the series other than the main pair. Again, as I never watched the first series, I never saw Ah Deng with Jing Jing so I can't miss their pairing. However for this new pair, I just like all their scenes and it's sweet how they both have someone who they'll always miss, and it'll make them cherish each other more. It's also nice to think they can visit their other loved one respectively together at the same place whilst giving the other their own space.

Alex Lam (林子善) as MJ (米佐治),  Raymond Cho (曹永廉) as Leung Bao (娘爆) and Crystal Li (李雪瑩) as Grace

MJ becomes a magistrate since last series. The women he had feeling for married someone else. Leung Bao is a police man, and Grace is a new solicitor at the legal advice centre. The three have a light hearted love triangle in the show. Even at the end, Grace states that she is undecided between the two men, and the three stay good friends.

They are all good people and I like their screen times but they didn't really stand out to me apart from Raymond's case and when Grace helped MJ get over his fear of being a solicitor. Their acting were fine, Raymond and Alex as always, and I thought that Crystal made a good crack at her first series. I thought that Grace was a good character to portray for the first time, for she is  a simple character who is just happy most of the time, so is probably relatively more easy for a newbie to act out.

I think the triplet's storyline didn't pop out at me because they aren't the mains, and they are for comedic effects, so there aren't any heart warming moments. 

Personally, I like the Grace-MJ pair!

Christine Kuo (苟芸慧) as Lynette (景伶俐) and King Kong (金剛) as Chok Man (黃作文)

Lynette ran away from home and married Law Ba when she was just 18. Law Ba disappears after a while and she spends the next 10 years loving and looking for him, getting in all sorts of danger. Good hearted, she stays in Hong Kong and opens a surgery to help local people. Coincidentally, it's at the same place as where Law Ba works. One day she finally sees him, but realises he has girlfriend. Angry, she drives of a random person's car and crashes it, ending up in hospital. Learning that Law Ba has moved on, she agrees to leave their relationship, but as she had already met and befriended Kris, she does not want Kris to know of their previous relationship. She uses time to try to forget about her relationship with Law Ba.


The person's car she drove and crashed was Chok Man's: a also good hearted man, who not only is at all angry at her for ruining her car, he is attracted to her. When he lets her know of his feelings, Lynette realises that she still loves Law Ba and she is going to fight for her love.

Lynette later goes into a coma, and Kris promises her that she can be with Law Ba when she wakes up. When she does, she reminds Kris of her promise, but decides that she wants to be in a relationship where the man loved her more than she loved him, hence ending up with Chok Man in the end.


I don't think Lynette's character was necessary. I expected massive turmoil when Kris found that that Law Ba was married but it was over in 10 minutes. Then there was just a minor argument between the two women about who is better for Law Ba. As I said in this blog post about TVB newbies, I didn't find Christine's acting convincing, even to the end, even though I think I'm more used to her acting. The thing is, King Kong has a pretty bad accent too when he speaks Cantonese but I really like him, he has great charisma and more importantly I think he is a solid actor. Just look at him when hosting game shows and him in this series or No Regrets!

Back to Christine's character I didn't feel sorry for her at all. I think it's due to Christine's unconvincing acting once again. I just couldn't feel pity for her! I'm guessing that at the end she was just reminding Kris of her promise so Kris and Law Ba would somehow get back together again. But I had no idea how that was supposed to work.*

As soon as King Kong's character came out I was like, go on, just win her heart because I just found Lynette's situation in her love triangle to be useless. On the other hand, for Lynette, good for her in the end! Chok Man has no fault! He must be the most perfect character in the entire series. Still, I thought Lynette seemed to be a bit selfish. Does she actually like Chok Man? And she said that the first person she thought of when she woke up was Law Ba. Did she really mean it? I hope she actually thought about Chok Man, leading on her accepting him, rather than really just wanting someone who loved her more than she loved him.

Also was there a stated reason for Lynette to have an accent? Sum Sum is from mainland so she has a reason, but Lynette is daughter of a Hong Kong man?

*I notice that I seem to be attacking Christine a lot. Just want to make it clear that I just don't like her acting, otherwise I get the impression that Christine is a kind, simple and innocent girl  :) 


Other thoughts

I started watching this series with great expectations. Though I enjoyed the series, I don't think it's as good as how the first series sounded. Glad none of the main characters from the first series died though as I discussed in this post about TVB sequels. The last case was quite exciting to watch, and having Law Ba in jail again for a bit seemed to bring the series to an end as that's where he was at the end of the first series and the start of the second. The very last scene was very cheesy though, with the friends running to the new case. But still, yaaay happy ending! That makes everything better and I accept the cheesyness!!

造王者 King Maker initial thoughts and Character chart (in English)

So King Maker has just started airing and I've only watched the first 2 episodes. So far so good. Only thing with these serious ancient series is that sometimes I don't know what the characters are talking about :)
I'm going to refer to the character as their actor/ actresses names, as if you're anything like me, I haven't watched enough episodes to remember their names, so it should be easier to read.


First note: It seems like Wayne's character is more clever than Raymond's Zhu Ge Liang!



So I was having a look at the character map on the TVB website and my first reaction was "Oh my! This looks complicated". Having a further look, it wasn't really, they'd just put in more of the characters on the map than usual. I thought I'd translate all their relationships into English! (See below)


From the two episodes that I've watch so far, both Kent and Wayne should be Pierre's advisor, but apparently Kent becomes Chris' advisor later on. Also I don't know if it was intended, but there is no line connecting Elaine Yiu and Wayne Lai together, when they are in love. Does it mean that their relationship is to be short lived?

The following are relationships that I learnt from reading the synopsis on TVB's website. They may be already well known already, but don't read if you want to find out yourself any more relationships between the characters! I'm also making some guesses to what is going to be happening to the characters. They're probably wrong!


Again, after only watching the first two episodes, not much has been shown yet. I know that Wayne will get separated with his siblings, even though the King said that they could reunite. His little brother is going to unwillingly become an eunuch and his sister will lose her memory, then brought up by Krystal Tin. It's confusing because Wayne's little brother is in fact Patrick Tang, and his little sister is Natalie Tong.
It seems the three siblings won't know their relationships, Natalie for obvious reasons, and Wayne won't recognise Patrick as his will be called by his eunuch name. Patrick should recognise Wayne though, so I wonder how the storyline goes from there.

Their relationships will probably get more complicated as Patrick is under Florence Kwok, but Wayne will be against her. This means the brothers will be against each other. At least his little sister develops feelings for Pierre, who Wayne is working for. But TVB style, she'll probably get murdered by Vivien Yeo out of jealousy. Probably just before she finds out who her brothers are.

Another confusing thing is why Natalie is apparently Shek Sau's daughter when she was brought up by Krystal, and Krystal has no relation to Shek Sau?

So they are my initial thoughts. Maybe I got fooled by the TVB synopsis or the character chart. I predict lots of big scenes of Wayne and Kent arguing, lots of women crying, and touchwood, probably a sad ending. If so with the latter, I think I'm going to throw a little tantrum and cry. Happy ending please, TVB!

回到三國 Three Kingdoms RPG review

Spoilers alert!

I really enjoyed "A Step Into The Past" so I had been looking forwards to "Three Kingdom RPG". I also like   all of the main leads. It was quite interesting to see how they put in the story of borrowing arrows from Cao Cao and tying Kenneth's character with it, as well as when he found Hua Tuo to save Zhu Ge Liang's wife.


Kenneth Ma as Sze Ma Shun / Wun Shun / 司馬信

At the start, Wun Shun does not understand how to respect others, and thinks little about others in his actions. In Hong Kong, he masters the skill of playing video games revolving characters of the Three Kingdoms. Unfortunately that is all he is good at. No longer a young man, he does not have steady source of income, and only works as an extra for TV series. Even in this job he is lazy and takes every opportunity to do as little as possible.

One day, during work as an extra for an ancient series, Wun Shun is transported back to the Three Kingdoms era (and luckly he is in costume, and even has a wig to fit in with the people of that time). He meets Fan Gan who looks up to him as his saviour, giving him somewhere to live. Not long after, Wun Shun meets his idol, Zhu Ge Liang. When Zhu Ge Liang is approached by Lau Bei to help him with war strategies, Zhu Ge Liang does not choose Wun Shun to help him, and Wun Shun becomes irritated with Zhu Ge Liang vowing that their friendship is over. Wun Shun later works for Hon Leung, who carries the same position as Zhu Ge Liang.

Through texting his sister, Wun Shun plans to return to the present time at a certain date. During his last few days, he sings a love song to Song Yau and Song Yau develops romantic feelings for Wun Shun, even though he feels nothing.

Finally, the day comes where Wun Shun can return to the future. He causes choas at Lau Bei's house before leaving. Unfortunately he goes to the wrong place to be transported back to Hong Kong so is still stranded in the past. Having ran away and caused chaos from Lau Bei's house, he is captured as a criminal and put into jail. It is not only because of Song Yau that he is released. However he is demoted to a servant.
Later he finds out that Hon Shun has a plan to kill Zhu Ge Liang and blame it on himself. He thinks of a plan to show Lau Bei that Hon Shun wants to kill Zhu Ge Liang. He succeeds, and Zhu Ge Liang then asks Wun Shun to help him with his work.

Later, he gets shot by an arrow and experiences a near death experience. It is here where he fully re-evaluates his actions and becomes considerate for other. Since he had mislead Song Yau into thinking they were a pair, he tells her that though she is a great girl, he has no romantic feelings for her.

His actions later causes him to have to leave his area, but he is wanted dead by Zhu Yu. Saved by Song Yau, he finally finds that he does indeed have feelings for her, but by the time he decides to tell her, she had already gone.

He is later captured by Cao Cao's strategist, who once worked for Lau Bei. Wun Shun is forced to help them defeat Lau Bei, and cannot just escape when the opposition also captures Song Yau.

Later he finds out that he still had an opportunity to return to Hong Kong and vows to take Song Yau back with him. Sadly when this opportunity comes, only Wun Shun manages to get back to the future, watching Song Yau being left in the past.

Now back in Hong Kong, Wun Shun is no longer the boy he used to be, and works to open his own successful fast food chain, whilst tying history of the Three Kingdoms in his business. He watches the weather every day to look for an opportunity to return to the Three Kingdoms era. 30 years past, and there has been no opportunity for Wun Shun to go back. He as a large painting of Song Yau in his office and has the same sandwich everyday- one he made with Song Yau before. He suddenly finds that there is another chance for him to go back to Song Yau and goes the the place where he was to go back.

As Wun Sun approaches the blue light to take him back, he gets a heart attack. Only metres away from the portal light, he realises he can't get there in time, and sings the love song he once sung Song Yau as he dies, arm reached out for the blue light.

Kenneth's character really annoyed me at first. I didn't like his attitude how he always thought he as right and how he always acted as he was above all others.  For example at that start of the show when he though that Raymond's character should have taken him as his helper and threw a huge strop when he didn't. The two had not met for long, and Wun Shun had done little to show he had any intelligence.


There were some complaints from viewers, saying that Kenneth was too old to portray such a character. I personally really enjoyed it. He does comedy very well and pulls all the right faces. I remember chuckling after he fell down the cliff and was said "I thought you said that even cliffs wouldn't put you in a difficult position" to the dead warrior. 

His ending was so sad! So there he was, waiting every day for 30 years for a chance to go back to the past to meet Song Yau again. When he does get the opportunity finally comes he dies. As in the finale, Song Yau does come to the future, couldn't they let him see her first to fulfil his wish?

Also I think that he thought that he really belonged to the Three Kingdoms era after he got back to the future, for when he was trying to go back he said "Song Yau, I'm coming back". It just makes everything that little more sad :(



I think Kenneth Ma is great character. Wun Shun differs greatly from his doctor role in The Hippocratic Crush and his evil role in Tiger Cubs or Grace Under Fire. 



Raymond Lam as Zhu Ge Liang

Zhu Ge Liang is a scholar who is seeked by Lau Bei to work as on of his strategists. He has an intelligent mind, helping Lau Bei to solve many different problems. This causes jealousy from others such as Hor Leung and Chow Yu who both plot to murder him. Luckily both of their schemes fail. He meets Wun Shun before becoming Lau Bei's strategist. After getting to know Wun Shun, Zhe Ge Liang thinks of him as a good friend and trusts him greatly. Zhu Ge Liang cares deeply for his wife, a women with poor health but with a good understanding of war strategies and who can help him in developing his own strategies.

He continues to help Lau Bei fight his wars.

Wasn't very fond of Raymond's moustache at the start of the series, but I got used to it! 

I really did like Raymond's portrayal of Zhu Ge Liang. It was different to any other characters he had done, and he came across as a modest, wise and calm person. I liked how his character cared for his wife, and they had great interactions in the series. It did seem like Zhu Ge Liang wouldn't have got very far in his career without his wife though since she was always helping him with war strategies and translated old scripts. 
It was also nice to see him trusting Wun Shun as a close friend. 

His character didn't really get an ending, as in he was still doing what he'd been doing the whole series which is fine. It was lovely to see that his wife could stand up again though.

Tavia Yeung as Song Yau

Song Yau is a housemaid at Lau Bei's house. Having worked there since she was young, Lau Bei and his wives see her as their daughter. Wun Shun affected her life from the start when he told of freestyle loving in Hong Kong, leading her to not accept a marriage proposal from a well-educated, good natured man from a rich family.  She is later mislead into thinking that Wun Shun had romantic feeling for her, and she started to have feelings for him too.
Wun Shun develops guilt after a while, and leaves Song Yau heart-broken when he tells her that he never had feelings for her.

She is later captured, by the opposition of Lau Bei to force the also captured Wun Shun to help them defeat Lau Bei.

Wun Shun tells her that he would take her back to Hong Kong. When the time comes, Song Yau is unable to travel to the future with him, watching him leave her. At the end of the finale, it shows Song Yau arriving in the future 30 years after Wun Shun went back. However, Wun Shun was already dead. Song Yau tears up.

Tavia was the female lead of Three Kingdoms, but I felt that Leung Ka Ki had more screen time for her. I enjoyed Tavia's limited screen time, even though she isn't important in the series apart from being Kenneth's love interest. To be honest, I think she was also there to make watchers feel pain when she and Wun Shun could never get together.

Top notch acting though as usual. This was her first collaboration with Kenneth. They shot The Hippocratic Crush later. I think it certainly helped with their chemistry there!

Others

There wasn't any weak acting here. I loved the acting of Lau Bei and his two brothers. All the interaction between the men was very likeable to me. I've heard some complaining that the relationship between the men seemed homosexual, but I didn't think so. To me, it showed that they were loyal to each other and caring to others as well: if they treated each others with such respect they should also care for other people.

I also really enjoyed Leung Ka Ki, as Zhu Ge Liang's wife. Wearing minimal make up to portray the ugly and ill- healthed wife of Zhu Ge Liang  (personally I thought she was still quite pretty), I thought she gave it all. I look forward to seeing her again in another TVB series!

Fan Gan was a great addition to the series. I got worried about TVB killing his character a few times. I felt sorry for him when Wun Shun kept bossing him about but he wouldn't complain. It was sweet when Wun Shun started to think of him as a good brother of his. I hope that he got promoted to a high rank on the war field and got lots of money!
Fan Gan is a great loyal friend. Great portrayal too! I didn't remember seeing the actor either, but he definitely left a deep impression on me here!

It was nice watching Kenneth's character meeting the ancient people, especially Zhu Ge Liang, who was his idol. It was also funny how he often used Hong Kong Slang and even some English when he was in the past. You'd think that after being in the past for so long he'd get used to talking proper chinese right? Another scene which I remember finding very enjoyable was when he just got transported back, and saw loads of pandas on the mountains (however fake looking they were!). It just seemed to add the cherry on the top for me to show how different things were to be for Wun Shun!

Again with the ending: it just wasn't very nice for me! Even though we only saw Wun Shun missing Song Yau, no doubt she also missed him until she got to the future too. Then she saw an aged and dead Wun Shun. It's going to be awkward for her as she's in the future now, and has no Hong Kong identity, which basically means she'll be thrown out of Hong Kong. Her only hope would be Wun Shun's little sister who only knew of her. So it's a sad sad ending for both characters. As again, it seems like Song Yau's character was to distress the audience watching this series. If she wasn't there, Wun Shun would be happy in the future, whilst still becoming rich and successful.

護花危情 Witness Insecurity review

Witness insecurity is probably the last Linda Chung series of 2012. It's nice and fast paced, and doesn't drag as it's only 20 episodes. If anything, I don't think that some things were explained very well: it was rumoured that the show was meant to have 28 episodes, but apparently that rumour is false.

Bosco Wong as Hui Sir / 許瑋琛

Hui Sir is a witness prosecution unit officer. He has to protect Hailey when there is fear of her being murdered. He learns that she doesn't like to talk to others because she has post traumatic stress disorder. He is patient with her and fulfils his job by protecting her from any danger. When Hailey was not in danger any more, Hui Sir did not have to protect Hailey anymore, and they parted.
Not long after, Hailey was bought back into his life when, his cousin Jojo (to Hailey's request)At this time, her father makes Hui Sir decide between Hailey and his police job. The situation gets more complicated when Hui Sir finds evidence that Hailey's father may have committed a crime decades ago.
When Hui Sir does find enough evidence and Hailey's father gets arrested, he gets ran over by a car.
He then gets on his motorbike, drives to find Hailey, and tells her that he'll protect her from the stars as he died.

I liked Bosco's portrayal as a calm and competent policeman. I never saw Hui Sir having much feelings for Hailey. He didn't really think of her as a friend when he didn't have to protect her any more and he wasn't going to keep in touch with her. He seemed a bit confused when he first learned that Hailey had feelings for him and quickly stated that he felt nothing for her. 
His found some feelings for Hailey when she went missing and did struggle to decide between his job and Hailey. I thought that TVB could've shown more of his struggle to emphasise his feelings.  

It seemed a bit silly when he got ran over in the last episode. He was not bleeding on the outside at all, not even a scratch. He colleagues let him drive off after getting off the floor and looking a but woozy. It was sad that his character died, I hadn't expected it!
For some reason though, I was more sad when Ba Da died. Probably because it was more believable. It was so sudden too :(


Linda Chung as Hailey 喬子琳

Hailey has Post traumatic stress disorder. She saw her own brother die when she was young, and since then she became scared of new people and crowds. She has an attitude that people mistake as being arrogant. When Hui Sir comes into her life, she gradually loosens up. She accepts talking to new people and learns how to be in places with lots of strangers again. She even takes the initiative to get to know Hui Sir, and waits for his love to return when he tells her that he can't forget his deceased ex-girlfriend.
Her father does not approve of Hui Sir as his daughter's boyfriend. Hailey is stuck in the middle when Hui Sir tries to find evidence that her father did illegal things, and her father says that Hui Sir is only interested in her money.
In the end her father is arrested by the police and Hui Sir finds her, dying, but tells her that she does have a place in her heart.

I did like Linda's portrayal. I could really see how scared and irritated she was at the start of the series at other people. However I did think that her change to accepting other people too quick. It also seemed that her love with Hui Sir was more brotherly than romantic love, as it came when he saved her cello (which used to be her brother's) from the fire and knew about the same star constellation as her brother. I only seemed to see romantic love appearing when Hui Sir did not have to protect her anyone and she hadn't seen Hui Sir for a while.
Near the end of the series, I didn't think her character was any different than any other character Linda has portrayed in the past. Her character even became a bit boring for me then.

Paul Chun as Gong San 喬江山

Gong San is a successful business man, and cares about his daughter Hailey the most in his life. He objects to her and Hui Sir as a pair, forcing Hui Sir to leave the police force if he was to be with his daughter. It turns out that 33 years ago, he, his brother and another man named Sapura kidnapped and murdered a rich man to get their first amount of money to start their businesses. The police never traced the evidence back to him.  He tries and failed to prevent Hui Sir from finding this out, and is arrested in the end. He does regret his actions in the end when he is arrested.

A veteran actor, of course Paul did not disappoint! Gong San's actions were quite clear from the start. He cared for his daughter, wanted the best for her and was scared that people will find out what he did in the past and have everything he accomplished taken away from him. A well rounded character. I wonder if he would've let Hailey and Hui Sir together at the start if he wasn't a policeman.

Other thoughts

This is another series that won't stay in my head for long. The ending of Witness to a Prosecution was rushed. It was paced so fast that it only took 6 minutes from where Hui Sir was chasing Gong San to the ending where he died. In some series the climax and resolution are shown within the first 10 minutes of the last episode and the remainder of the episode shows everyone being all happy and gathering together for a BBQ ending.

I think this show is Bosco's first proper male lead, as in the show wasn't about women. He's been second lead enough times with different characters to portray to be able to carry a show by himself. I look forwards to watching him lead another series soon!

衝呀！瘦薪兵團 No Good Either Way review

No Good Either way has a fresh storyline and cast. It's the first time seeing Ruco Chan and Kristal Tin this year, and we don't seem to see them very often anyway. It was a series I enjoyed. Parts of the story actually made me laugh out loud, which is rare- I usually only do internal laughings at TV :)

Ruco Chan - Alex/ 巫雅歷

Alex is a product designer and good friend with his boss. He feels injustice when Violet stops him and his friend Steve from being promoted. A light hearted character, Alex and Steve pulls pranks on Violet as a sort of revenge, such as putting her on webcam without make up on in front of an audience at Alex and Ling's wedding.

He has good with relationship "A4", his companions who he works with to design successful products. A carefree bunch, they often slack off work and look for "inspiration" by not doing work, much to Ling's despair, who attempts to get them to concentrate.

Soon, Alex is finally promoted and his funny personality begins to recede. He starts to overwork A4, and when he finds out that A4 had been seeking another company to work for, he treats them badly, putting them in a room with no windows and gives them pointless jobs. He refuses to let A4 help him with a product vital for his company's survival, even when he approach a problem in its design. He becomes frustrated at everybody including his wife and sister as he believes that no body thinks he can design this product by himself.

As he manages to produce a successful prototype of the product needed for his company's survival, Aaron, one of the A4 puts a virus into his computer so the information of the product cannot be seen. In the end he decides that one person is not enough to do things.

In the end he reunites with his wife and sister, and with Aaron arrested, he collaborates with A3 once again to continue to make products for the company.

I enjoyed Ruco Chan's performance, it was the first time he participated in a comedic series with TVB and I thought he was very natural and had chemistry with his friends and family. He performed consistently throughout the whole series, even though I didn't understand why he suddenly become all serious with his job and had a character change.

Louis Yuen- Steve /閔家華

 Many times Steve thinks that he is going to be promoted to manager at his company, but in the end he always finds out that he is not. He loses faith in his company, and opens a fruit juice shop with his Indian friend Inderpal. This business is unsuccessful, and he puts his former job at risk when secretly working at his shop during his office hours. Once filled with the hope of being promoted again, he closes the juice shop. To his dismay, he is yet not promoted. He becomes very unsatisfied again with his job. 
In the end he finally gets promoted to manager.

As usual I though Louis did great. He really is good at the comedic roles. I felt sorry for him, after thinking he is to be promoted each time and not. It wasn't good for him to snoop out of his office work to work in his fruit juice shop though. I was glad he was finally promoted to manager at the end. However to be honest, after seeing him being so depressed and stealing things from his company for his juice shop, it doesn't seem like he really deserves his position. 

It was nice to see him paired up with Leanne Li at the end though I thought it was a bit awkward how she suddenly broke up with her boyfriend and decided to be with Louis instead.

Kristal Tin- Ling / 甯寧靜


Alex's wife and also works in the same company. She puts her personal life and work separately, at home she is a loving wife though she disapproves of her husband's attitude at work. She tries to make her husband be efficient at work and be more responsible, but fails.
Further in the show, her relationship with Alex falls when Alex becomes angry at anyone who intervenes with the product he is making.

Similarly with Kristal Tin, I thought she did her parts well. I find that she is a solid actress. I hope that TVB gives her more opportunities!

Natalie Tong- Kin / 巫健兒

Alex's sister her ambition is to buy a house ASAP and is disheartened by the rising house values. She goes out with Aaron from A4, and the relationship does not go smoothly. They both invest in a house and Aaron does not prepare for paying for his debts by buying impractical expensive things whilst asking Kin to pay for him for now. She later finds that Aaron has told her many lies, and decides to break up with him.
At the end, her boss Jacky asks her to be his girlfriend. Even though he shows that he is a good choice, showing her his health reports and his properties, Kin decides not to be with him.
Later she sees Aaron after being released from jail. It is an open ending to whether the two reconcile.



I thought Natalie Tong did well in this series. Nothing to make me go wow, but it was comfortable watching her. I had always liked her acting, but in The Life and Times of a Sentinel. I thought her performance there was terrible, and I'm still recovering from it. I anticipate her first leading series with Wayne Lai, hopefully with such an experienced actor she can prove to us that she's main lead material!
I liked Kin with Jacky, and did want her to be with him in the end. But thinking about it more, I don't think that Kin would be happy with Jacky in the relationship. He makes a very good friend, but as a partner, he would lack the romance and surprises that Kin would want in her relationship.

Jason Chan- Aaron / 姚以朗


Part of A4, his is part of a designing team led by Alex. He becomes frustrated by Alex when he believes that Alex does not give his work appreciation. When he is approached by another company he accepts, and when Alex finds out the dislike between the two increases further. He later betrays the company by attempting to stop the company from survival after money problems. He serves a year in jail for doing so, and delivers pizzas afterwards. In the end he appears to have become more mature, being more mature as a whole.



I thought that almost all actors and actresses did well in this show. Only Jason Chan bothered me. I thought his expressions were quite often the same, especially during his confrontations with Alex. I also didn't like his character. I thought Aaron was selfish and didn't think of others. It seem to me that he never took his relationship with Kin seriously. He offered to pay of the house they bought together, but didn't plan ahead and had to have his girlfriend pay for his debt. He was not by Kin's side when they were supposed to refurbish their house together as he was scared of it being haunted, and masked it with a lie. I liked Jason Chan in Be Home For Dinner, but I don't think he's ready for being the main lead yet. But I'll get to decide only when his new show with Linda Chung airs!




I have enjoyed this show. It has been great for passing time. Not a memorable series though, but worth it for a simple and relatively quick paced series to watch!

25 years ago, Siu Nam's 4 years old daughter Tansy was abducted, the kidnappers mistaking her for another child. Since then he never heard anything about Tansy; she never returned and her body was never found. 25 years later Siu Nam still strongly believed that Tansy is still alive. 

25 years later after Tansy disappears, Siu Nam meets siblings Ivan and Natalie. It is revealed through Ivan's memories and thoughts that he was one of the kidnappers of Tansy, but her fate was not revealed to the audience. Guilty of his actions, Ivan allows his little sister to befriend Siu Nam, and the two become good friends. 

Further on the series, Ivan starts to murder people. He murders a relative and also Jerry, Natalie's ex-boyfriend. After the Jerry's corpse is found by the police, the hunt begins for the murderer. Soon afterwards

Ivan's fiance, Ester splits up with him due to his fidelity. More murders are committed, adding pressure to the police. 

Meanwhile, slightly earlier in the story Siu Nam finds that he can get into people's character and find out about the thoughts decisions that the person makes. He helps the police to solve cases from this. Naturally he is also involved in helping to solve these murder cases. He suspects that Ivan is the murderer at one point. Since the murders occurred on Wednesdays, Siu Nam watched over Ivan on a Wednesday night, yet another murder was committed that night. Siu Nam therefore apologises to Ivan.

Shortly after Ester and Siu Nam become a pair. Ester wishes that Siu Nam stop helping the police with the murder cases, especially when the man who chopped off her arm three years ago is believed to be involved in the case by the police.

For several reasons Kong Sir kidnaps Ester and tries to replicate the situation where her arm was chopped off to help solve the case. With no development Kong Sir attempts to chopped her other arm off to make her memories more vivid. 

Surprisingly, Ester grabs a knife and plunges it into Kong Sir's body, and even complains about him moving about too much as his is getting blood everywhere which she has to clean up. 

She then strangles him to death. 

Siu Nam starts to suspect that Ester is the murderer and also finds that Ester does not actually love him. Ivan also discovers the same. After Ivan confronts Ester it turns out that Ester found out about Ivan murdering Jerry. She killed all the other people to cover up for him. Ester then admits the murders to the police, lies that she also killed Jerry and commits suicide in jail.

After Ester's death Siu Nam and Ivan gets into a battle of wits. Siu Nam deduces that Ester's story must be a cover up for Ivan. Ivan decides to kill Siu Nam, but accidently murders Steve, his close friend instead. 

Natalie finds out and is angry at her brother. She then gets ran over by a car. 

Siu Nam guesses that Ivan is the murderer of Steve. However when Natalie wakes up in hospital she tells the police that her brother was with her at the time that Steve was murdered so Ivan could not have been the murderer. Furthermore she tells Siu Nam that she is his long lost daughter Tansy. She says that kidnapped by Ivan and his father, Ivan accidently killed his father and raised Natalie as his own sister.

Afterwards, Natalie reveals to Siu Nam that she is not actually Tansy, but only lied to save her brother as he killed Steve. Ivan also then tells Siu Nam that his father killed Tansy. After some conflict, Ivan strangles Natalie and Siu Nam kills Ivan to save Natalie. 

Realising that Tansy is dead, Siu Nam gets stuck into Ivan's character as he believes that Ivan's character has more meaning than his; Ivan still had a sister, but Siu Nam had no one anymore. 

To prove to Natalie that Siu Nam was her brother, Siu Nam decides to perform a live magic trick on TV. He is in a box suspended in mid-air above a big fire. He is chained together and has only minutes to unlock the locks and save himself. If not the box will fall and he will die in the fire.

Of course, since he is not Ivan, he cannot perform the magic trick. He realises that he is not Ivan, but Siu Nam. Being fully awake, he throws himself towards the walls of the box to try and free himself.

The next scene is an extract from Shakespeare's "The Tempest". We hear Siu Nam's voice. He tells us that he has finally let the past go, accepting that Tansy has gone forever and he finally feels at rest.

My thoughts

An open ending, we do not know for sure whether Siu Nam's character survived. 

As it is an open ending, I believe he did: to be honest I don't have a reason, but as Siu Nam decides that he wants to continue living, I believe he can.

Personally, even thought the ending was thrilling, I felt slightly let down by the feasibility of the magic trick. In real life, how ever "cool" a magic trick is there should not be the possibility of a the magician dying- it would make terrible television if it did. There would be lots of safety measures, and if Siu Nam did fall into the fire a load of firemen would immediately pop out and put out the fire and the paramedics would swiftly whisk him to hospital. The company hosting Siu Nam's magic trick would not want to be sued.

I felt really sorry for Siu Nam. I could tell how much Tansy meant to him and his sadness in realising that Tansy really was dead. I find the saddest thing is that he'll never know where her body is.

I find at weird how Natalie reacts to things. When she found out that Ivan was having an affair whilst going out with Ester she cried lots over it, moving out and refusing to talk to him for ages. It can be understandable as it was also during a time when Ivan was changing.
However she also got really upset about Siu Nam when she found out he was going out with Ester. I found this a but silly as Ester had already broken up with her brother a while ago and Natalie knew that it was Ivan's fault.
Yet when she found out that her brother had killed Steve, although angry, she still talked to him. This could be because she has matured. But, I don't remember her crying for Steve at all, they were good friends after all.

After the first week or so I was slightly bored. Though I thought the episodes were watchable, I was never fully engaged into the story. I just wanted to know the ending. However I watched every episode. I know the show was supposed to have lots of deep and meaningful issues. Unfortunately I didn't understand much of them.

However it is nice to see TVB doing something different. I do think it is a good production. Good main leads, and unexpected twist and turns. Personally I didn't think Master of Play was scary either. Definitely not suitable for young children. But if people are bored of those typical TVB dramas with a barbeque ending,  Master of Play is a good alternative. 

TVB: Should we believe in happy endings?

A Great Way to Care (仁心解碼) starring Alex Fong, Kate Tsui and Raymond Wong became of the Top 10 highest rated series in 2011, peaking at 35 points at its second week of broadcast.

It has recently been announced that a sequel will be produced in July 2012, with some changes in the cast. So who are they?

On the supporting side, Raymond Wong's character will become successful and move away from HK. Edwin Siu will take his place.

For the female leads Tavia Yeung and Yoyo Mung will be casted instead of Kate Tsui. 

So what happened to Kate's character? Was her illness too much to handle? Did she die? We don't know yet, but I'm sure that many viewers out there enjoyed the pairing of Alex and Kate and were happy to think of their future after the ending of the first series.

Sadly, the happy endings that TVB give us aren't actually "the ending" sometimes: they make sequels, can't cast the same actors or actresses and subsequently cruelly separate the pairings that viewers like us have grown to love. Even worse, they kill of one of the characters to make it easier to continue with the plot. Or to allow the remaining half to be sad and reserved until their new significant other half pops into their lives and their lives once again becomes bright and colourful.

Pairings where characters had to die in a sequel:

1) Healing Hands 妙手仁心

This franchise is quite sad, for Lawrence as Dr Ching has luck the size of a shrivelled pea when it comes to love.

First there's Ada Choi who does appear in the second series dies in a fire.

Lawrence's character then falls in love with Yoyo Mung, who commits suicide for the third series.

Third comes Gigi Lai, Lawrence's new love interest. As his character has realised now, he and women do not come together well, but finally decides to give a chance for himself and Gigi, confident this time that maybe their relationship will last.

Both fortunately and unfortunately Healing and Hands is combining with The Hippocratic Crush. It will be nice to see Dr Ching again and his developments as a brain surgeon. But since Gigi Lai has left the acting industry, her character is likely to have the same fate as Ada and Yoyo.

2) Forensic Heroes 法證先鋒

Frankie Lam and Linda Chung's pairing in Forensic Heroes also did not last. Linda made an appearance in the second series, but within a couple of episodes her character had already died from a bomb attack.

3) A Pillowcase of Mystery 施公奇案

Kenix Kwok's Character died in the second series when someone bombed a boat she was on. Bobby Au Yeung was paired up with Jessica Hsuan instead.

4) Witness to a prosecution 洗冤錄

Not a couple here as Bobby had two wives, Jessica Hsuan and Mariane Chan. They died at the start of the second series from a fire. Charmaine Sheh was casted as Bobby's love interest instead.

There are most likely other series where the female leads have similar fates. For some reason it is always a female character that doesn't make it to the sequels.

It's lovely to see happy endings where the main characters end up together. But it's sad to know that if a sequel is made to that series, the lovely couple probably won't really have their happy ending.

Watching out for The Hippocratic Crush II. Definitely hope that YuTou will stay together until the end and beyond!

Edit: found out that in Triumph in the Sky II, Zoe (Myolie Wu) will die to make way for another character and storyline. Typical?

TVB series 2012, who have we seen the most? (Jan-June)

Again, as in a previous post, http://therearethreehahahas.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/tvb-series-2011-who-have-we-seen-most.html I have created a word cloud to show which actors/ actresses we have seen the most recently, and also who we will be seeing in the series that TVB have shown to air next. The bigger the name the more series the person has been in. It's only the first half of 2012, wonder who we will be seeing next!

As I noticed, Linda has been in a lot of series recently, from the naive girl in "L'escargot" to the graceful but rather stuck up dancer in "House of Harmony and Vengeance".
Second leads Natalie Tong and Kenny Wong have also appeared frequently as has Florence Kwok.

Unlike last year we've had a break from Kate Tsui for 6 months now, not including her guest star appearance in Gloves Come off. Only having "Highs and Lows" and "Seasons of Love" (yet to be produced) we won't get to see her much this year!

As a random note:
Is it me or does it seem that Moses Chan is in half of the series that Kenny Wong is in: "Heaven and Earth", "4 in Love", "Master of Play", and from previous years, "Dance of Passion", "The Gentle Crackdown", "War and Beauty", and probably more I can't think of!
Also expecting Charmaine to drop of the list next year :(
